By 1943, the large size of Italian submarines proved unsuitable for Atlantic warfare. It was proposed that they would, instead, be used as transport vessels to bring goods from the Far East. Rubber was a commodity which was particularly sought. In return, Germany would provide nine brand new U-boats of the reliable type VIIC. Although these were completed by the time the Armistice was signed, they were still working up by their Italian crew in Danzig and were seized by the Germans.
